Canada Climbs to Olympics 10 Gold Medals


Feb. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Canada won two speedskating titles to jump to the top of the standings at the Vancouver Winter Olympics with 10 gold medals.

Under heavy criticism for underperforming at the Vancouver Games, the Canadian men's short-track team responded on the final night of competition at Pacific Coliseum with gold in the 5,000-metre relay, and gold and bronze in the 500 metres.

Charles Hamelin won the men’s 500-meter gold medal and then was part of Canada’s four-man team that raced to victory in the 5,000-meter relay at the Pacific Coliseum.

Canada now has 21 medals overall, moving into third place behind the U.S. and Germany. The 10 gold medals for the Olympic hosts are one more that Germany and two better than Norway and the U.S.

The U.S. has a Games-best 34 medals, while Germany is second with 27.
